Waffles (a webcomic)

I hate the art, but love the way the logo came out.  Also, I think that this is actually a funny joke.  I was sorta raised on TV so go figure.

I did this one entirely with the brush over the pencils, with a minimal amount of pen. It looks a little uneven but ends up working, I think.  Still not perfect though, I need a lot of practice with the brush and, of course, the character design consistency.

Another “full family/cast” strip.  If you can’t tell, I have a little bit of a problem keeping a consistent design for every character.  There are some basic absolutes, but in terms of fine-tuning it all, it’s still a little up in the air.  I’m hoping to work on that.  Other than that, I have to say that this is one of the best strips I’ve ever drawn so far.  The lettering’s almost perfect, there’s a minimum of tiny mistakes I managed to cover up perfectly with WhiteOut, and the bits I did with a brush are awesome.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

A full “total cast” strip, casting this more as a young family comic instead of just focusing on the kid (Waffles) himself, or the father-son/single dad-son idea I was kicking around at one point.   Anyway, yeah…this was just a one-off joke involving Waffles-esque characters in a single panel, and worked itself out waaaaay differently.  Decided to do it like this instead.

A family portrait/group character sheet for the comic, from when I decided to expand the cast.  I’m not going to lie, me reading a lot more family-oriented strips like BABY BLUES definitely influenced this decision, because I wanted to try and work with that dynamic.

I’m gonna be honest, this is a pretty blatant riff of a “Calvin and Hobbes” joke that focuses on a similar setup between Calvin and his dad over being outdoors.  I didn’t realize it at first when I wrote this strip, but I was about 2/3 of the way done when I remembered it. Visually a good strip, but not the best-written thing.

A more formalized version of something else.  I initially did this joke as a semi-formal “Waffles” sequel that I posted on my blog, something I didn’t really intend to be a formal comic.  However, I liked it so much then that I thought about bringing “Waffles” back after that, oddly enough, which led me to redo this particular strip and consider bringing the father character into the fold more often.

An attempt to do a horizontal Sunday-style comic. Obviously not in color, but vaguely emulating the more-than-four-panel, straight-across layout that I’d consider “standard” for Sunday comic strips.

This is a redone version of the very first “Waffles” strip I ever did, ever. I mostly just redrew it because I can draw and write better now than when I first started making comics.
